How well do you think you know your roots? Here is a lesson in Curly Hair Plopping 101:

Note: When we say "Natural hair" in this article we define it as hair in its original state that is not chemically processed for straightening purposes (relaxers, perm). For example: As the owner of Tee-Owels and someone who has Type 4C hair (the kinkiest of the spectrum) and (currently) chemically straightened hair, I can not effectively plop my hair. It would just come out wavy, as chemicals strip your hairs natural curl and volume.

What is curly hair plopping?

In a world where we all seek to level up our mane game, Curly Hair Plopping is a great technique for natural and curly girls to have in their toolkit. Curly Hair Plopping is known as the process of drying curls with a tee-based towel in a way that creates and promotes natural curl definition. The "plopping" part refers to the way hair is piled onto the towel to form the perfect curls. Thanks to the emergence of the natural hair movement and the spread of curly/ textured hair knowledge on the internet we are able to implement this technique and watch our curls thrive (at last).

What are the benefits/ the science?

Curl plopping greatly helps to reduce frizz and gives your curl its natural definition without heat! The results are voluminous, bouncy and glossy curls that can last all day. Hair plopping is healthy and not damaging for your curls with its NO HEAT and tee material towel approach. Unlike other methods with traditional bath towels and microfiber, the soft texture of t-shirt material reduces friction and doesn't strip your hair of its moisture! This is especially beneficial for curly and kinky hair types that strive to maintain their moisture.

The Origin of CHP

Curly hair plopping has a digital footprint that dates back as early as 2006. Women had been slowly but steadily referring to it in blog and vlog form, using the method helps manage and enhance their natural curls. The first official guide began on Naturally Curly's hair forum and rocked the world for us curly and natural folk ever since.

STEP 3. PLOP

Lay your Tee-Owel down on a flat surface (such as the bed) than flip your head forward so all hair is in the center of the towel and lower your head down to accordion hair onto the towel from there.

STEP 4. WRAP

When you've done that you can raise your head up with the towel firmly placed over your hair, scrunch up the ends of the towel in each hand and pull them to the front. Cross the ends and pull to the back (as many times as you can) before tucking it in to stay in place.

STEP 5. REMOVE

Simply untie your towel after 20 minutes and let your curls flow beautifully. TIP: No pulling through curls with fingertips!
